Results: A total of 65 men participated in the study. Of the total study participants, 33.8% were aged 25–34 years and about 40% of them had multiple sexual partners. The use of sildenafil for recreational purposes was 66.2% and was found to be higher than its use for medical purposes 33.8%. Use of the drug for <1-year duration (AOR = 34.086, 95% CI [2.90, 401.37]) and 2 years duration (AOR = 21.42: 95% CI [2.10, 218.82]) were significantly associated with its use for recreational purpose. Non-recreational use of sildenafil includes erectile problems associated with diabetes mellitus (27.1%), heart disease (9.2%), hyperlipidemia (4.2%), and relationship problems due to stress and poor communication (3.1%).

PAH phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5 inhibitors) are medications used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), a condition of high blood pressure in the arteries that carry deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs. PDE-5 inhibitors are also used to treat erectile dysfunction and enlarged prostate.
Three patients had a severe fall in blood pressure 1 hour after sildenafil (one at visit 2 and two at visit 5), the standing blood pressure falling from 128/85 to 65/55, 104/60 to 56/32, and 115/70 to 55/39 respectively. All three remained conscious but had severe symptoms and signs of orthostatic hypotension, feeling unwell and unable to stand for more than a few seconds. Each patient had to wait (for 4 hours in one patient) until the drop in blood pressure became tolerable. Figure 1 shows the average mean blood pressure changes in this group. On the basis of this adverse event a decision was taken to unblind the study and discontinue recruitment.
New research suggests that you might be able to reverse erectile dysfunction without medication.
Physicians should advise patients to stop taking PDE5 inhibitors, including VIAGRA, and seek prompt medical attention in the event of sudden decrease or loss of hearing. These events, which may be accompanied by tinnitus and dizziness, have been reported in temporal association to the intake of PDE5 inhibitors, including VIAGRA. It is not possible to determine whether these events are related directly to the use of PDE5 inhibitors or to other factors [see ADVERSE REACTIONS]. There have been postmarketing reports of bleeding events in patients who have taken VIAGRA. A causal relationship between VIAGRA and these events has not been established. In humans, VIAGRA has no effect on bleeding time when taken alone or with aspirin. However, in vitro studies with human platelets indicate that sildenafil potentiates the antiaggregatory effect of sodium nitroprusside (a nitric oxide donor). In addition, the combination of heparin and VIAGRA had an additive effect on bleeding time in the anesthetized rabbit, but this interaction has not been studied in humans.
