Medications, such as treatment for high blood pressure, can also play a role. These drugs reduce blood pressure by reducing blood flow, which can affect erections. It is not recommended that men stop their blood pressure medications, of course. But some patients can eliminate their need for the treatment through changes in diet and exercise.
Several FDA-approved phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitor medications exist to treat ED in men. Studies in vitro have shown that sildenafil is selective for PDE5. Its effect is more potent on PDE5 than on other known phosphodiesterases (10-fold for PDE6, > 80-fold for PDE1, > 700-fold for PDE2, PDE3, PDE4, PDE7, PDE8, PDE9, PDE10, and PDE11). Sildenafil is approximately 4,000-fold more selective for PDE5 compared to PDE3. PDE3 is involved in control of cardiac contractility. Sildenafil is only about 10-fold as potent for PDE5 compared to PDE6, an enzyme found in the retina which is involved in the phototransduction pathway of the retina. This lower selectivity is thought to be the basis for abnormalities related to color vision [see Pharmacodynamics].

Read on to find out about nine common remedies for ED, plus the truth about which ones live up to the hype and which fall flat.
Any of the PDE-5 inhibitors can also cause your blood pressure to drop (though Stendra is less likely to cause this to happen). You might think that’s a good thing, but blood pressure that gets too low is also dangerous. If you get dizzy from taking any of these medications, you should discuss with a healthcare provider; this could indicate a potentially unsafe drop in blood pressure. No planning needed — you take a pill once a day Can be taken with or without food Can also be taken only as needed Proven among the most effective ED treatments Tends to be preferred by men and their partners, compared to sildenafil More affordable than medications like Stendra Far more affordable than brand-name equivalents Costs a little more than sildenafil Risk of mild side effects is slightly higher than Stendra
You might find yourself with ED if you don't take care of your diabetes. That's because high blood sugar can damage the nerves and blood vessels in your penis. Talk to your doctor about ways to get your diabetes in check so you can get back in the groove.
Doctors also recommend changing your lifestyle to deal with ED. Some of the proposed lifestyle changes include weight loss, quitting smoking, reducing alcohol intake and exercising.
